NHS Rotherham have completely redesigned the trust’s website to improve engagement  with the public on healthcare issues.

The IT and Communications teams  at NHS Rotherham did rigorous side by side testing of CMS systems to ensure the system they chose would completely satisfy their requirements. NHS Rotherham carried out set tasks with different internal editors, the systems were then scored on performance and ease of use. Sitekit CMS scored highly in the tests and the team found the Sitekit CMS to be the easiest to use. 

The new site design was completed in house by Rotherham’s own web design team and now has an exciting web 2.0 rich design which makes it engaging and easy to navigate for visitors. Each page also gives visitors an opportunity to provide feedback, allowing NHS Rotherham to make regular improvements to the site based on comments provided.  

The website also allows visitors to access content from the main national healthcare site NHS Choices without having to leave the local NHS Rotherham site, such as ‘behind the headlines news’ which provides an unbiased and evidence-based analysis of health stories that make the news. The Choices resources are updated automatically, saving  NHS Rotherham precious time and effort.

NHS Rotherham launched the new website with a walking to the moon campaign (www.rotherham.nhs.uk/onesmallstep). Sitekit built a step counter into the public extranet which encourages  visitors to register to use the extranet. Visitors can add the amount of steps they have taken from their pedometers  and join the group effort to try and reach the moon. NHS Rotherham have managed to launch a very successful campaign which has helped raise awareness of the new website and had a positive effect on local healthcare.

NHS Rotherham has further plans to include more proactive health applications and personalisation to build on the visitor engagement achieved so far. Jason Brewster from NHS Rotherham said, ‘Who’d have thought writing web pages would be as simple as this?!
