The Department of Health has recently advised NHS trusts to upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) to a newer version of the browser as soon as possible due to security concerns and poor performance. The challenges created by IE6 are felt widely. A recent petition on the Number 10 website has already received over 6,000 signatures highlights the size of the issue.
IE6 is currently holding back organisations. The way people communicate and work is increasingly on-line and many recent web applications will not function properly with IE6. Some organisations also lockdown staff from using alternative browsers which greatly restricts the speed at which people can find information and some of the online applications they can use.
Sitekit supports the Department of Health advisory because the development overhead to support IE6 could be dramatically reduced and therefore allow more time to be spent on the Sitekit CMS interface that supports more modern browsers. Chris Eckl, Sitekit’s Chief Technology Officer said “In web terms IE6 is extremely old as it was originally launched 8 years ago, web technology has progressed significantly in the last 8 years. If all NHS organisations migrated to IE7 or 8 trusts would benefit from a much faster browsing experience and organisations like Sitekit would be able to provide richer, more usable application interfaces”.
Upgrading to IE6 is a large task for public sector organisations, however in the last month Sitekit have seen many NHS organisations progress to more current browsers.
