UK’s first electronic Personal Child Health Record Announced at Sitekit’s eHealth Symposium
07 June 2012

The UK’s first electronic Personal Child Health Record (ePCHR), or ‘eRedbook’, was announced at Sitekit’s eHealth Symposium on the 18th May.

The eRedbook, developed by Sitekit Solutions Ltd, will spearhead the shift from clinician to citizen management of healthcare data, the importance of which was recognised in the recent Department of Health Information Strategy.

Dr David Low, National Clinical Lead for Paediatrics and Child Health, Department of Health, Informatics Directorate, cited the eRedbook as a fundamental part of this paradigm shift, highlighting the key challenges and benefits the move from paper-based to online patient records would bring. Microsoft’s Andy Payne then went on to speak about the platform the eRedbook will operate on, Microsoft HealthVault, illustrating how this platform has been developed to meet the Department of Health’s security and privacy requirements for the management of healthcare data – a necessary reassurance for both parents and clinicians.

Demonstrated at the 2012 AGM of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the eRedbook proved a hit, with clinicians instantly recognising the appeal of having the Redbook available on a desktop PC or mobile device, and the benefits ease of access, usability and security would bring to both parents and medical practitioners.

Pilot sites for the eRedbook will include NHS Moray, NHS South Warwickshire, NHS Rotherham Foundation Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals Foundation Trust, Portsmouth Hospitals having recently been complimented by Andrew Lansley for their use of innovative technologies, such as digital pens, in their management of patient records.

eRedbook project partners Maverick TV, producers of the hit show Embarrassing Bodies, will lead a nationwide programme of engagement during the pilot phases and subsequent release of the eRedbook, ensuring parents throughout the UK are kept up to date with the application’s development.
