Sitekit has committed to a unique partnership with Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and West Highland College to design, develop and pilot a Foundation Apprenticeship in Software Development.
The apprenticeship, a school-based preparatory vocational course, is a brand new concept which is expected to be adopted by schools and colleges across Scotland. It is being developed in response to the Commission for Developing Scotland's Young Workforce Final Report 'Education Working For All'.
During their apprenticeship, students attend Sitekit’s Portree office on a weekly basis to learn about web development and project management. They are given various practical tasks, for instance to create a web page or a mobile app. They then demo their progress to the Sitekit team – much like they would do in a real-life IT environment.
Campbell Grant, Sitekit’s CEO, said: "We want to inspire young people to consider a career in software development. The outcomes of the pilot and contents of the course will be evaluated and if successful, rolled out nationally."
"The key message we have had from young people on our Interim Report is their need for significantly enhanced quality work experience while at school and college." -Sir Ian Wood, chair of the Commission for Developing Scotland's Young Workforce
